Default APIM Confusion

So based on several factors I've deemed my APIM to be shot. It's mainly tied to the GPS. GPS is OK for short stints but for road trips once it gets off track it takes everything with it. Soft resets fix the issue for maybe 5 to 10 minutes.

Issues:
  • GPS will wander off track, catch up sometimes, then wander again before it just stops moving altogether or will say I'm driving 10 miles away.
  • Once the GPS goes on the fritz it leads to audio and map controls become extremely delayed. Real fun is changing XM presets and having it interpret a tap as a long hold and reassigning channels.
  • Bluetooth drops in and out as well after the GPS dies
Question is if something like this eBay item will be plug and play (Reading a bunch about 3.0 vs. 3.4 upgrade incompatibilities and bricking units) https://www.ebay.com/itm/144232744419

OR if I have to find an older used one, FORSCAN it myself, and hope it works.

Attached is photo I took earlier of my SYNC info screen - I'm currently on 3.0 with what I'm guessing are the 2016 maps.

From personal experience, there are several generations of APIM. What year is your truck? Each early generation had its own problems. Upgrading to 3.4 should be easy on any of them. IF you need to replace it look for a later generation (4th) to avoid the black screen in the cold issue. You will most likely need to do some Forscan changes because there are so many different APIM /ACM combinations. IF you need to upgrade APIM and get a later gen consider a APIM and ACM upgrade which will give you ALL the XM channels instead of just 130 Sirris ones. (Write up on cyanlabs )

Yea, I'm not looking to waste upwards of an hour hoping I select the right files, format it properly, or it works when it's done. Nor do I want to brick it anywhere during the process - I need it again in March. It only acts up with GPS running so I'll throw an antenna at it and go from there.
