Did you look for feathers? Possibly a bird hit?

Didn't hit anything, apparently this is somewhat common after an internet search.

Was the mirror defrosters on . Tempered glass has internal stresses that can sometimes cause the glass to spontaneously “explode” if it has been nicked, cracked, etc, or has any slight surface defect that allows a crack to start propagating.

No, but I've had two driver side mirrors on my pickups break like that when meeting other Ford trucks on our local dam--without wide lanes.

And my F250 mirror recently broke again with my daughter driving it.

Most likely the case as with windows.

It could've been an unlucky direct hit of a rock on the mirror housing.

Weirdest thing ever!
Big *** explosion
Passenger side mirror gone. Dust outline from the passenger side mirror on window from where it hit the window. Casing that held the passenger side mirror hanging by wires.
No other damage to vehicle..

With so many people experiencing this why is ford not checking into this? The force from this has had to injure someone at some point.
