Just my story.
That is why there is a wire wrapped around the factory antenna. The wire alters the aerodynamics and prevents the whistling sound.

It depends on what tool you have.
I just used 2 pliers and hold the ball and the rod. Pull it or twist. If needed, hammer the ball a little bit then pull again by the pliers.
Cut the antenna mast @ a certain length. Taper the tip by the hack saw then hammer the tip slightly to make it rounder & reduce the diameter. Do that until the tip can be slide to the ball hole. Apply epoxy and paint later on. Follow Powergator tips.

Find a tool that will slide up and down the antenna but wont slide over the ball. Hold tightly and slide the tool forcefully against the ball. It will pop off. Cut of the antenna to the desired length, file the end down to make it slightly narrower than the rest so the ball will go back on. "Slam" the ball back on the end by banging on garage floor. Couple quick coats of spray paint, reinstall. All done. Cut it to just below roof height. No loss of reception, no whistle, works fine.

Does the antenna also serve as the antenna for the Sirius XM?
