Default Another Timing chain stretch.

Third one in two weeks. Looks like these are going to be a common occurrence for the 3.5 EB. This one has 82k on it. Can tell the truck has been well used. And the inside of the engine isn't as clean as it should be. It was traded in like this. Now we know why it was traded in. They shook their head and said "Just fix it". Upon tear down the primary tensioner is about to fall out it's so far out due to how much the chain is stretched. There has been a TSB for a while but I have just recently started seeing quite an bit more of this.

There was a day not too long a go when a 60,000 mi service included replacing the timing chain in a lot of motors. Might be a good idea for the 3.5?

Kinda, curious what kind of shape the oil was in.

How long ago was that? I've only heard of that service interval for engines with timing belts, not chains. Never heard of a modern vehicle that had any replacement interval for the timing chain.

Any interference engine will have a replacement interval for the timing chain at either 100,000 or 120,000 miles.

The Nissan VQ V-6 is notable in this regard, as are a lot of Toyota engines, IIRC.

Dont remind me! The VQ35DE V6 in my 2006 Altima SER had the dreaded broken chain slack guide and thus needed to have all new guides, tensioner shoes etc replaced. Of course it was out of warranty so I bought new water pump, oil pump, all 3 chains, new tensioner etc. and tackled this job in my garage with the engine still in the car. Being fwd made this silly ill designed flaw that much more difficult. Man I hope I dont/wont face this job again in this truck. Altima runs perfect now.

HAHA, at least part of my brain still works! I had a 2010 Maxima and on that forum, there were numerous threads about the timing chain. Some of those people drove their cars REALLY hard, and the timing chain didn't care for it.

Glad you were able to take care of yours!

Is this a 2015+ 3.5 eco? It was my understanding this issue had been taken care of. In fact my 2011 had this issue, and I was skeptical of getting another eco (almost went with 5.0), but was told it was no longer an issue.
