Calgary had a major hail storm in June. Hit the north side of the city and fortunately I live in the south. Some stones were as big as tennis ***** and it lasted a long time. Insurance companies are calling it the costliest hail event on record (for Canada) at $1.2 Billion. If this happens, you will get damage.

My truck was hit with softball sized hail 2 days after I bought it. Glass, body panels were demolished. Total bill was over 29k and American Family wouldn't total it since it was BRAND new. My thread is here somewhere. I hope no one has to ever go through that

Few years ago we had a nice little hai storm that did $1800 in damage to my boss"s 17 Colorado. My 16 F150 didn't have a ding on it. Guess that so called "high strength steel" is kinda wimpy compared to our "beer can trucks".

My truck has gotten hail damage twice. Its a 2016. The first storm was brutal and the hail was about golf ball size- maybe smaller. Got a few dents on the hood and roof, nothing major. Truck was 3 months old. Next storm happened when I parked at the airport (Denver), in the uncovered lot, in May. Ill never make that mistake again! Every panel had damage, like 6k worth. Found a pdr place that pays deductible, cant tell it happened. This the first vehicle Ive owned that has gotten hail damage. All others were never garaged, this one is.

A few weeks ago my `15 KR & my wife`s `18 Kona were parked next to each other in the driveway. It started to hail marble sized stones. The pdr cost to my insurance company was $1500 for the truck & $1850 for the Kona. My cost was zero & you can`t even tell there was any damage.

Aluminum is more elastic than steel so it will tend to bounce back after an impact, but that only goes so far. Big enough hail and not only will it dent but it will tear a hole in the aluminum.

Reading this thread makes me very happy I cleaned out my garage and now keep both new cars inside. I understand there will be times when I might be out somewhere and a hail strom will hit, but considering my truck is sitting in the garage 90% of the time the odds are with me. Couple years ago we did have a major wind storm blow through. My wife's car (thankfully her old one) was sitting in the driveway. A very large limb broke off a black walnut tree and conveniently landed on top of and inside her car. That was on a 2008 RAV4 with 100K on it. I thought for sure it would be totaled. But no - they decided to fix it. Sometimes these insurance companies seem to make the stupidest decisions.

My truck doesn't fit in the garage, and Texas has lots of hail storms... I've gotten up in the middle of the night to drive the truck to a nearby drive-through bank or gas station and hide under the canopy for a half hour while the storm passed.

It's always based on cost. If they can fix it for less than totaling it, it gets fixed. If fixing it costs more, it gets totaled. There really is no other consideration.

Holy cow that's bad hail!

Thank you all for your replies. Very informative group and good discussions. I hope you all are able to stay out of the hail.
