Add a leaf
Added a leaf to my rear suspension today. I carry a lot of weight all the time and was hitting the bump stops at times on large bumps. One leaf on each side added about 800lbs spring capacity and brought the truck back up to unloaded height. I have crew cab short bed. Rides better and corners better now. I could not take the squishy rear suspension any more. I have done this to every truck I ever owned. The '15 seems the softest sprung yet. It made the steering more stable now also. I guess the geometry of the low riding rear threw the front end angles off a bit to the point of getting twitchy. Amazed at how just one extra leaf can completely change the truck. Only took an hour at a good spring shop. If I end up pushing snow with this one I will increase the front spring rates by 550lbs this fall. I only have the 3.5na engine and it handles all the extra weight just fine.
Any pics?? I want to add a leaf on mine also. What brand did you go with?? or did shop make custom?? How much lift did it give you?? Did they add the leaf between the two oem leafs or between the two leafs and the over charge?? Thanks
It was kind of hard to watch them do the add a leaf. Torches and smoke cutting off u-bolts and the '15 has a lot of stuff hooked to the axle. The leaf was added just below the main one. It looks a little thicker than the stock but the same 3" width. They use raw spring stock and arch it to match the next leaf and then drill 2 holes for the spring locators on the axle. I did not get a before and after measurement but it sits the same as an unloaded new one now. My guess is it raised it 1 1/2 to 2 inches from my previously fully loaded position. The ride is a lot better. It did not get any stiffer and it won't hit the bump stops like before. I was thinking about replacing the shocks because I thought they were not strong enough. After the add a leaf, the shocks work fine for now. The weak springs were really giving the shocks a work out all of the time. It rides really nice now. It still feels like a F-150 and not rough or bouncing like a F-250. Adding a 2nd leaf may cross over into that rough ride or making the leaf with more arch may do the same. This was the first '15 the shop has done. It is a very experienced shop in business for 50 years in Rockdale, IL called Joliet Suspension. I am extremely happy with the way it turned out. Cost was $403.41 and the mechanic's name was John. I think he was the owner' son.
