Maybe the tanker trucks create a shadow in the other lane or they are wider than traditional 18 wheeler trucks.
I'll get a case started for this concern, speedwayman12. Please send me your full name, VIN, servicing dealership, updated mileage, and best daytime contact number.

I've experienced the "tanker truck syndrome", but it seems as though it only happens if I'm passing the tank around a slight bend. Going straight by them I've never had a problem, but if there's a slight bend the truck freaks out and applies the brakes.

It's sunny outside and I approach a road overpass. AS I approach to go under the bridge, the cruise control suddenly brings on a high braking mode... Worried that the car behind me is going to rear end me I immediately hit the accelerator. My assumption was/is that the shadow under the overpass is being misinterpreted by the vehicle's camera as a vehicle... This situation has also happened while driving on lite colored concrete (almost white) and transitioning to a black asphalt road... Bam!!! The brakes are on and we are rapidly slowly down... In 1,000 miles of highway driving the situation repeated itself about 6 times... The sun has ranged from high in the sky to about 45 degrees to the truck... This situation has also repeated itself when passing a 53 foot truck with the sun on the far side of the truck... The "situation" does not repeat itself at every overpass on aa sunny day or while passing every truck with the sun on the far side of the truck...

Does anyone know if there is a light sensor on the windshield that is used to interpret the light conditions around the truck? The reason I ask this is that there is a sensor below my mirror on the windshield that appears to have some silicon caulking material partially blocking it...

I did take the truck to the dealer three weeks ago and requested that this issue would be reviewed with FMC service... I have yet to hear a response....

Any thoughts are appreciated... For now I drive with my foot in the ready position near the accelerator ready to reverse the sudden de-acceleration.

I might add that my F150 also has the collision avoidance package... I thought that this might be the culprit, but it is not.... I turned the avoidance system off and still had the issue with the cruise control....
I believe you can adjust the sensitivity on this. This happened to me the first time I used it as I passed along side of a big rig. I adjust the settings to LOW and it worked fine after that.

Same thing happened to me twice (brake applied passing a semi going in a straight line). It also temporally stopped working twice in less than a 1000 miles; once because of medium rain and the other time because of a mixture of light snow and rain. Would I pay for that option again? No!

Well it happened 2 times in a row, so now when I see a tanker truck I just deactivate until I pass. Its almost a none issue now, its so easy to reactivate once I am past. I am very happy I have this option on my Platinum and use it every time I am on the freeway for an extended time. I don't expect the adaptive cruise to be as refined as it is in $120,000 Mercedes or Audi.

I have also experienced this. It has happend to me at least 5 times. It has happened to me while passing a semi on my right while going straight. It slams on the brakes and is not a good thing at 80 mph while cars behind you. Plus mine has also gone out in the rain.

That defeats the utility of the option. Might as well use + - on regular cruise. The system requires some trust. You normally would be making all the adjustments yourself. I expect to feel a little nervous watching to see if it reacts properly, but I did not expect that it might make situations more dangerous.

I do. It is a $1250 option.

Brittany, if Ford has a response to this, I'd like to hear it too.

Does any other manufacturer have this problem or is it exclusively a F150 glitch?

Similar things have happened to me also. Twice as I proceeded to pass a semi, I'm guessing the camera catches the wide mirrors of the semi in its view and hits the brakes hard. Very scary both times, I wouldn't be surprised if there is an accident reported on here soon.
