I am not sure, but I am thinking it was a tongue in cheek comment.

As time goes by, I am finding that these engineers are quite a bit smarter than I originally thought.

Anyone ever remove these (to install a different grill perhaps) and get a check engine light after reinstalling??? Just curious if this it's normal and it'll reset itself maybe?

The shutters go thorough a bit of a start up routine each time you start the truck.

Thnx...yeah, after a day of driving it reset itself... Scared me at first cuz off the 100+ ppl who installed this grille, no one else ever mentioned the engine light coming on, though perhaps I screwed something up

I didn't know my truck had these until I swapped grilles. I understand what they are for but my question is: when do they activate? At a certain speed?

I'm going to leave many details out but here's some basics as to why hot air is more efficient. Hot air is less dense meaning you need less fuel to become stoich. Hot air also has less temperature differential so less thermal transfer within the combustion chamber which, in a nutshell, means that when the fuel is ignited more of the heat is used to pistons down instead of other wastes of energies. Same reason some cars use electric thermostats, they run hotter for fuel economy, 230* or some (although hot air is not good for power because of detonation purposes where those cars reduce temperatures to around 180-190*). I expect ford will use electric thermostats in the near future as they chase CAFE numbers.

Another benefit is that it will heat up the intercooler and help prevent condensation buildup. Not to change the subject, but has anyone had this problem on the 15' yet?
A little off the subject however I have a 3.5l ecoboost and I just ordered a bull bar with an integrated led, will it still get the proper air flow that it needs to perform, thx in advance

I spent a lot of countless hours doing aerodynamics homework in college and can say that while the shutters do help reduce drag...it's not by much. I would guess they are mostly for improving cold-start warm-up performance...which also helps economy...and durability...hardly. I didn't realize they put these on the 5.0's...interesting. Just another trivial utility item that can break. :-)

Every little bit helps. Shutters in the grill, tailgate lip, front air dam, computer commanded alternator, curved front body work, 6 speed transmission etc. etc. None of these things do a lot by themselves but they each contribute to the overall improvement

Here's some pictures of the upper shutter on my 2015 F150 w/5.0L - taken when I swapped from the XLT to Lariat grille. The first picture is with the upper shutter still mounted in the upper grille. The second picture is of the upper shutter removed from the upper grille.

IMO I think they were put there to help the engine warm up in the sub zero temps and alsow assist the engine to stay warm in real cold temps. How can a shutter be saving mpg I don't get it? The air will be forced trough the rad when opened and hitting the shutter when closed.
