6 month old truck rear window EXPLODES....Ford says not their fault
#61
Hhmmm, think I will put a piece of black tape over my rear defrost switch. We live in a warmer climate, vehicles in garage at night, not much use for it here anyway. I THINK this also defrosts the mirrors, I will keep this in mind...
E.T.A.---Better yet, disconnect the rear defroster... Reckon how much trouble this would be??? Need to have the dealer do this??? It would be a kick in the gonads to have to pay to keep the expensive window from blowing....

Ridiculous that we should have to start disabling features to avoid parts exploding. What's next....do we have to remove our doors so the latches and locks won't freeze?

Thanks for responding, Deysha. This is a pretty scary issue. What can you tell us about the likely cause of the problem and fixes? Honestly, I'm now afraid to use the defroster function.

I contacted carid.com, a company that has OEM type replacements for rear windows in the 2015-2016 F-150.
My questions were "is the window safety glass" and is it tinted or does it have a metal film for the tint". Below was the response:
That includes the solar glass. That is tinted. Yes, the product is safety.
The product is manufactured to fit Ford F-150 2015-2016, we have the product in stock. Please follow the link to the product: http://carid.com/cart.php?rst_cart=7...tm_medium=lead
I highlighted the fact it is a tinted safety glass.
That explains why there are small bits below the window. Plate glass is illegal to use in North American vehicles, including on toppers. And safety glass (also known as tempered glass) can break for no apparent reason. Normally its being struck by a pointed object, nicked, or stressed. Flexing of the window frame can cause enough stress to break the window.
Also, if memory is correct, a search of our forum will show a few moonroofs that cracked. Chevy had issues a number of years ago with the sunroofs of Corvettes cracking and shattering for no apparent reason.
In a word, these things just break for no apparent reason. It's a pain to clean up and replace, which is why it's a good idea to carry glass replacement in your insurance if it's not already included.

Well it looks like the blame game is on.... I just talked to MY dealer after three days and they said Ford was sending a guy out to inspect my problem. I want to be there to hear how he explains the glass blown out inside out and the scorched glass that was my fault! My dealer says he'll be there within 48 hrs...that's just great....one week later...just fix it...wouldn't that be cheaper?
