You can absolutely shift to 4H or whatever while stopped; truck doesn't have to me moving. And if for some reason you're shifting when you shouldn't, like to 4L at higher speeds than allowed, the computer tells you to slow down, or whatever else and doesn't do anything. The message the OP is getting is simply not normal. If it can be duplicated at will, then take it in and get whatever it is corrected. My guess is the clutches on the transfer case might be worn out, so when power is needed at the front wheels, they're not strong enough to transfer it, and the computer detects that, and shuts it off. Good luck, and keep us posted what it was.

I was curious does leveling affect the 4x4? My truck is not leveled but was thinking of doing it.

Nope. It won't hurt the system. I'm leveled and 4x4, I've had it out crawling and on the beach, no issues with 4x4 at all. Been leveled for over 20,000 miles.

My truck is now doing this same thing. We got a little snow, I put it in 4A like normal and after a little fish tail that never happens when I’m in 4wd, I got the disabled notice.

I checked all vacuum lines and they seem fine. I even disabled the vacuum solenoid which should essentially permanently keep the hubs engaged and I still had no 4wd.

My truck was involved in an accident recently where the front drivers side wheel axle hub area took a hit and some parts had to be replaced. The IWE was not replaced I don’t think. I couldn’t tell if the passenger side was engaged or not.

I guess back to the dealer it goes.

DK15Lariat, sorry to hear that. I still have not been able to figure out what the problem is, I can't find anyone on the web that is getting the same disabled message. The OM says it is caused by overheating, but it happens instantly, not after it gets hot. I've connected forscan to it but there is no history of any codes ever thrown. If you figure out what is causing your disabled message please let us know. I would really appreciate it...

Agreed, it’s not an overheating issue at all.

I will absolutley update you when/if I get the problem figured out. I’m almost certain I will. I have a REALLY good local small town dealer. Once the weather clears up they are gonna come grab my truck and get started on figuring it out. They are already researching it.

I’m pretty sure my problem is related to the accident somehow. My 4wd has been flawless for years and lots of miles then just after an accident+repair it quits working? There must be something that was missed or unplugged or something.

I will I’ll let you know what I find.

I just heard back from the dealer. They said my transfer case shift motor is bad. Simple repair. I will report back if that ends up fixing the problem.

Thank you for letting me know man, I was afraid it might be the transfer case, but yeah hopefully it is just your motor and not Internal. And yes please post back with the final outcome.
