Default 3.31 vs 3.55

Hello all, about to pick up an 18 Platinum and have a choice. One of them has the Max tow with 3.55's, and the other has regular tow with 3.31, but added the 36 gallon tank. I only plan on going up to about a 33 inch tire and a level, so will the 3.31's be that big of a deal.. The difference in price is about 1700, and I don't think the one will come off that much..

I didn't notice any power loss going to 33's in my 5.0 with the 3.31 gears. I did however notice a significant loss on my old 2.7 with 3.55 gears after I added the same 33's

If you are upsizing tires, go with the 3.55...

If you have the 3.31 and upzise the tires your actual gear ratio will go down to around 3.20...

My 2018 is a beast even with the 3.31 and destroys my 2015 3.73 when accelerating in any condition...... but going upsize on tires is not a good option IMO

I have 33s on my 15 with 3.31s. It runs fine. An 18 with the 10 speed should run better than mine.

My comment regarding gearing in your position is to go ahead and pony up for the 3.55s. It will hurt your gas mileage very little and will make any towing you do easier on the driveline.

3.55's would be better suited for truck stuff.

I have 3.31 and please trust me when I say it's over-geared with the 10-speed and stock tires, much less 33s. If you are going to do city driving under 50mph than 3.31 works great. If you plan on towing or spending time on the freeway then 3.31 is not going to perform well with the 10-speed.

I also have 3.31s, and the next truck won't have them. I wish I could get 3.73s without going HDPP. But definitely go with the 3.55s, especially if you're going to upgrade tire size.

If you are going to upsize the tires then I agree with this statement..but if you are going to keep it stock then i disagree...my 2018 tows far better than my 2015... This Uhaul was full of wheels and tires, cabin was full and bed full.... It accelerates to 120kmh effortlessly, maintains that speed up mountains with ZERO strain........ its a beast

If you're not buying the truck to tow then max tow isn't necessary. With the 10 speed, rear end ratio's are no longer as important as it once was. As the vast majority of us don't buy the truck to "track" the only real issue with the 33's is your slight loss of gas mileage.

36 gallon tank is really nice to have....

I have 3.31 with my 3.5 10 speed. You want 3.55 at a minimum. That is my biggest dislike with the truck, wish I had 3.55 of 3.73.
