Default 2018 SCREW Lariat - Choppy ride with k02's

After changing out the OEM Goodyear Kevlar's to BFG K02's, I have found the ride to be very harsh and stiff. I'm using the OEM size 275-55-20s and OEM suspension

When I first received my 2018, I found the ride to be a major improvement over my 2015, especially over broken pavement. Now, with the K02's on my 2018, I feel that the ride has gotten much worse.

I played around with tire pressures and originally set them to 55psi, which is what BFG recommended... WOW the ride was horribly hard.

Then after searching recommendations on the forum, I set them to 40psi.... much better and this is what I am running now.

I am really missing the ride of when the truck was original. I could bring the pressures down to 35pst, but I don't know if that is too low for these LT tires.

Anyone else have this dilemma?... maybe do I need to upgrade the shocks?

35 is not too low for winter.

But an E rated tire is going to be more harsh. No other way around it.

Still possible they need rebalanced.

The ride of my 2017 XLT went to hell when I switched from the factory highway tires to AT tires. At 65- 80 mph the steering wheel was bucking in my hands and the accelerator pedal felt like a bee hive was living under it. Took it back to the tire shop and a rebalance fixed it. Night and day afterwards.

Balancing is not the issue with my wheels and tires... On a smooth road, the ride is smooth and quiet... When the roads get bumpy and has broken pavement, the rides becomes unsettled...there are some slight hints of bump steer over recessed manole covers and pot holes....

original equipment tires are soft, low ply tires. Your new tires are heavier and have stiffer sidewalls. The ride will be rougher.

Yea my thoughts would be the small sidewall, the KO2’s are supposed too have a super strong side wall from the videos I have seen and articles I’ve read on them. Were your old tires the LT tires? Friend of mine has the same truck as me but with LT tires and his is a lot rougher ride than mine was with the stock Michelin’s, I’m running blizaks now and it’s still quite smooth. Will all change soon, I’m going too KO2s as well but on a 17 inch rim

I'm not sure but it looks to me according to Tirerack.com in the OP's size the KO2s are D rated. Regardless I've be researching tires like crazy and trying to educate myself on truck tires. I know Raptor folks raved about how great their trucks ride. Obviously Raptor has Fox Shocks and a more advanced suspension for off road use. So I also looked at the specs for their KO2s on Tirerack.com and noticed they are C rated and 17" so its no wonder they ride good.

Actually the tire rating & size are unique to the Raptor from what I've found for a 35" (34.4") A/T tire that's C rated. Unfortunately they are only available on 17" & like the OP I wanted 20" so I've taken K02's off my list as possible options. The table below show the specs on first the Raptor tire then the K02s in the size of the OP's.

As if right now about the only bigger 33" diameter 20" tire that that I've see that has a somewhat aggressive sidewall and tread pattern that's not E rated is the Falken Wildpeak A/T3 with the specs shown below. It actually has a SL rating so its probably not the best tire for towing or big payloads. The tread depth is only 13/32" compared to the K02's 15/32" so the tread will not look quite as aggressive. One other plus to the Falken is they only weigh 48 lb. compared to the much heaver E rated tire.

Perhaps I've got my facts wrong so if anyone would like to correct me feel free.

Mike

Nitto Terra Grappler G2 also makes a 275/60r20 that is not LT rated. I have been researching tires for like 6 months. Losing my mind lol.

BFG doesn’t recommend a pressure. They put a maximum pressure rating on the sidewall. If you really care about ride get away from an LT tire. Regardless of load range they ride rough. Unless you need it for towing then by all means keep it.
