Shifting from 1st to 3rd or 5th to 7th is not defective or indicate a problem with transmission...its designed to skip gears and shift this way.
Thank you for the reply. So, considering that I apply steady, even pressure through acceleration, have a very light foot, and I do not tow anything, is it still normal for it to completely bypass 2nd gear?

That truck had so many issues I don't even know where to begin. It made all kinds of noise, and had issues in the front and rear. Sued Ford for breach of warranty and won, then got rid of it for the one I have now. This 18 has been damn near perfect, only issue was some idiot dropped the drive shaft at some point before it was built and it got installed, great QC Ford! They replaced it and it has been great ever since.

Yes its very normal. Probably because of how you drive which is not an issue.
These 10r80 10 speed transmissions from Ford (GM) are not the only ones that do this. Other manufacturers also do the same.

If your shifting is a little rough there is a program (TSB) update that will smooth that out for you.
Let your dealer know and they will install the new program and update the PCM - many on here have had that done (me included) and it made the shift patterns much smoother. Skipping gears is normal.

If you were towing a trailer that weighed say 8000# I suspect your transmission would surely cycle through every gear.

I only notice hard shifting when in sport mode, the down shifts are rough, is that normal, or does that TBS smooth that out?

I dont use sport mode much - ive only had the new Lariat for a few months and its winter here so maybe in spring/summer.
That said it shouldn't be rough shifting and as such I suggest getting the updated programming done.
Yes the TSB fix will (or should) smooth that out for you.
It made a difference on mine and mine wasn't too bad but others on here have seen extreme improvements after the reprogramming.

I had posted earlier that mine was doing this. Turns out the trailer plug is either faulty or was not installed properly and it is corroding out inside. Mine is actually being replaced tomorrow, and my dealer has replaced 3 in the last week. Seems Ford is not doing a good installation, maybe they need to slow down production and spend more time installing things correctly. With the block heater recall, this trailer plug, and the door latch system, they have no QC anymore. I noticed driving home in blowing snow, that even with a tonneau cover on, i got a ton of snow in the box from around the tailgate. Never had that in occurring in my truck before.

Anyway, Frocco, you may want to have the dealer inspect your trailer plug. I couldn't see any corrosion in mine, but when the dealer pulled mine they said it was full.

Where can one see all recalls for a specific year/model?
