Default 2018 overheating while towing

I’ve got max tow eco boost 3.5 and been towing the same TT since purchased new in 2018. I’ve never had any issues with overheating, regardless of terrain or temp outside. Not sure whether coincidence or not but ever since cam phaser warranty work, I’ve had it get to 230s regularly while towing and much higher a couple times. It went into a quasi limp mode once too. Trans temps seemed ok at all times. I’ve noticed it does it as I get closer to home where it’s a little more hilly but again, never happened for the first 3-4 years since before recent cam phaser work.

truck is still under ford warranty, Brought to dealership and basically was told they couldn’t duplicate the problem so their hands were tied. Anything short of bringing my Rv and driving far enough to find a few hills I don’t know what else to do. I even offered to video it but he said ford still wouldn’t accept that. I’ve seen some videos of a mechanic suggesting thermostat was the issue after cam phaser work but how do I get ford off dead center? Manager didn’t work either. It’s at the point I don’t want to tow my TT anymore. Truck used to be a towing machine, now, not so much.

Yeah I watched two of his videos leading me to believe it’s the thermostat…..but getting ford to agree to change it isn’t working. They act as if nothing is wrong.

Ford brags about the fail safe cooling system, there’s even commercials about it.

although I do agree your temps are too high, the owners manual and most dealers won’t look at it until it throws a code. Once you get an overheat it should log a code. No, I don’t want you to blow your truck up by purposely overheating it but Ford states that’s impossible, the truck will shut down and go into safe mode.

lots of folks here worship the ford engineers so they can’t be wrong, right?

If it was me, I’d try to find a different dealer. I have 3 near me…one is “by the book,” one told me I should tune my truck, and one will fix things before they are issues. If another dealer isn’t an option, I’d bite the bullet and buy a new thermostat and pay for a coolant flush.

good luck!

So if your truck goes into limp mode from overheating there's no code associated with the event that could show up in history?

In my manual, pages 361-363 discuss the cooling scenarios, some turn into a temporary mode to help cool the engine and some will completely shut the engine off and then it says “take it to the dealer.” I don’t think it records an event if it temporarily goes into a safe mode to help cool the engine.

Read lots of guys having this issue after camp phasers

Coolant was probably dumped to do the phasers. That shouldn't affect the thermostat but I could believe an air pocket. Dealership could have at least tried something.

Yeah, it evidently didn’t throw a code when in the quasi limp mode.

This was happening to me. Make sure the AC is on when towing. Also, what could be happening is the louvers in the grill are probably closing. I was able to disable the louvers by unplugging the connector near the hood latch when the louvers were open and that helped tremendously.

I can stick my fingers through the grill and feel that they're open.
