Default 2018 5.0L Question

Does anyone have any concerns about the spray on cylinder linner that Ford is using for the 5L, it's my understanding that there are no sleeves just a spray on coating. I know it's a long time ago but I seem to remember Chev trying something similar with the Vega! Any thoughts?

I will be ordering my truck this week and am still debating motor selection.
Thanks

It's become pretty common in the industry. I've had snowmobiles with nikasil cylinder liners, and I know that the 5.4L in my 2012 GT500 definitely had sprayed in cylinder liners.

Pretty common nowadays in any motor, nikasil, nanoslide, etc. The coatings are better in my opinion. They cut down drag adding to better gas mileage and they cut down engine weight. Nowadays that's what it is all about with engine manufacturing. I would not worry about the coatings at all, it is the future.

From the above link:

To exceed 500hp, Ford pulled out all the stops. It began with a trick engine block, featuring Plasma Transfer Wire Arc (PTWA) technology, a process that allows the material to be sprayed at supersonic speed onto the cylinder walls to create a durable finish, which eliminates the need for cylinder liners in the aluminum block. This also gave them a larger bore, so larger intake valves could be used, and it ensures a very high level of cylinder sealing.
Thank you. I feel better now, seriously.

Where I had thought of the '18 5.0 cylinder bore as an ultra-thin, "spray-on" paint, powdercoat, or aeronautical wunderkoating I now see it more as a 3D printing of a durable megametallic lining. When the time comes to replace my '16 5.0 with a newer one, I won't be concerned. Thanks again for the link. Mustang360 always has great reporting.

PTWA bores on the 5.4 in my 11, and the 5.8 in my 14, no issues so far.
I post on several Mustang sites, can't say there are any threads noting these bores being an issue..

Not an immediate concern, but the 2018 V-8, now having twice as much injectors, is a little more complex. It's for the better good.

For the cylinder liners, well, the links seem to clear the air. I intent to keep my 2016 until it dies regardless. I sold a 1993 5.0L F-150 two years ago. It still runs, as I get reports from the new owner. I hope my ages classy.

Keep your ear to the pavement... Our beloved V8 probably won't be around by the time that 16 dies.
