Just want to share my 2 cents on this topic. I do not pretend to own the truth, but here is my take:
  • this noise is a normal behavior from 5.0 and 3.5EB. It is odd because it wasn’t there on previous generations, but definitively there on current generation.
  • The one expecting the noise to go away with time or after engine replacement will be disappointed (see note above).
  • the ones saying their engine does not have this rattle IMO, is just because they did not experienced to hear it for various reasons (windows up, radio, very faint rattle, did not pay attention, etc...)
  • Rattle loudness varies from vehicle to vehicle, even for the same vehicle.

I agree with what you are saying, I just know mine isnt as loud as it used to be. I listen to the radio at the same volume every day, in fact i haven't even been listening to the radio much lately( got tired of the news and don't like today's music, also it isn't football season) I take the same route driven the same way. It has definitely gotten quieter with time. Now supposedly the Rotella im using is thick for 5w-20 but idk if that would have any effect on sound.

Agreed. I’ve had my 2018 3.5 for 1.5 years. Never heard the rattle once in that time behind the wheel. Exhaust is not loud and radio volume is low or not on at all. In the last few months when my wife has left the driveway while myself standing outside I can confirm my truck does it too. Only heard it twice and had to listen for it but it’s definitely the noise everyone else has. I’m of the opinion it truly is just a characteristic of the engine.

Good example. And I’m optimistic the situation you described happened with a cold engine (first drive after being parked all night). Those engines does not rattle once warmed.

Yes first drive of the day.

I can EASILY see how some owners report no engine rattle. For some the circumstances have to be set up just right and if they’re not, you simply won’t hear it.

I think Ford didn’t say it was normal. Just said.. It is not detrimental to engine or transmission. No fix needed or don’t try to fix it. However many ford mechanics and dealership say it is normal. LOL

The service manager I have been dealing with told me SEVERAL times that.."Ford advises it's a normal characteristic of the engine"..
Also a lady from Ford cooperate who handled my complaint told me the exact same thing. Who the hell knows what the truth is at this point lol

It's "normal" Yet they released a tsb for it 🤔
which of course didn't work.

That's exactly what I said to the service manager, and he did his best to sidestep, and deflect it.. he should have been a politician.
