I run 87 unless playing around and then I run E85. Just don't see the point of running 91 or 93 when E85 yields more power and is so much cheaper.
Guy dismissing higher octane need to understand that times have changed. You WILL get more power from higher octane on a modern engine. 1968 was over fifty years ago. Then was then and now is now.

anyway.. i run 93 .. i didn't buy a truck to cry about gas prices or how much it cost to fill it up.. that's the case i would have bought a tesla

For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions, for example when towing a trailer.
The reality is that like most things, what is noticed is influenced by the brain's expectation. In other words, when someone spends $.40 a gallon more for premium gas, they EXPECT it to perform better. I guarantee you that if you drained your tank to nearly empty, and someone filled it for you, without you knowing what gas they put in, and you didn't drive in hot weather or towing, you wouldn't know.
And then, when LED to the answer, like "did you noticed how the 91 octane really made a difference when you accelerated?", more than 1/2 the people would say "yes, I did", when in fact they had 87 octane in the tank.
Our brains led us to conclusions that aren't based on fact. Sit and read ANY forum on ANY subject and you'll see within a short period of time people stating opinions of what they think is going on that are 100% opposite from others, with great confidence - "I know that this fluid needed to be changed because I felt it / smelled it / looked at it ...
If you go through every post about oil changes, and how find every person that says they change it earlier than the IOLM tells them, and marry that up with people that have done actual oil analysis, and weed out the ones that have a problem of fuel getting in the oil, I will bet you can't find a single person where the oil analysis tells them that the IOLM is wrong. Yet, you have dozens stating you have to change it sooner because ______.

i think i read a thread with a discussion that had engineermike on this where he ECU was adjusting based on fuel octane .. can't remember if it was just the eco boost or both..

A few months ago I rented an Infinity Q60 400 hp turbo V6. Very nice car. Gas cap said to run premium only. I was in Texas and loaded it up with a couple tanks of 86 just to see what would happen. Car ran great. Seemed to dial back the boost a bit, but otherwise could hear no detonation, even trying to induce it. Modern engine controls are truly amazing.
