Default 2017 2.7 coolant temp sensor!

So yesterday I go to start my 2017 2.7 F150, and it takes a while for it to start and when it does it runs insanely rough and a coolant overheating icon flashed on my cluster. Killed it and ran forscan for DTC. I pulled a p0118 which from my understanding is the engine coolant temp sensor. However, after searching to internet for the better half of 8 hours I can’t for the life of me find a tutorial or reliable video on changing the sensor. I THINK it’s in the valley under the manifold but I’m not 100% due to the lack of information on the internet. I like to think I’m pretty mechanically able, so I’m aware of the possibility of pulling the manifold off, my question is, if I do, is it recommended I drain all the coolant out the system first? Any advice and criticism is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

OP, there is no coolant temperature sensor. Your issue is with the CHT which can also produce a P0118 in the absence of a ECT. The DTC is for the circuit high meaning that the sensor voltage is over the maximum allowable of 4.6 VDC.

Ford no longer uses an ECT but instead uses the CHT and other sensors to "infer" a coolant temperature which is then displayed on the IPC.

see this is why I’m a little scrambled because I’ve seen some people saying this and others saying that it has both and the ECT is under the manifold and the CHT is on the drivers side.

I stand corrected. Sorry for the misinformation.

Yes sir that about the most I’ve been able to find on it. Can’t seem to find any videos or tutorials on how to change it.

The ECT appears to be buried DEEP in the cyl head valley, as you mentioned. Seems like a REAL PIA to R&R. I would be sure to check (and triple check) wiring/connectors PRIOR to the R&R attempt.

yes sir I’ve heard it could be connector issues but what connector should I check other than obviously the one directly connected at the ECT?
