On a 16 F150 XLT,
My dad is looking at one, There is a dial that says trailer backup located under the 4x4 select ****. On my 15 this is where the trailer brake controller is located. Trying to figure out if this trailer backup dial means it has a built in trailer brake or not.

If it does it would be just below that dial. Lots of folks have installed them and used Forscan to turn it on.

 

Ah ok, so this one does not. Odd that it would have the trailer backup assist but not a brake controller. Seems like a no brainer combination.

 

No. Trailer Brake Controller is mounted right below the Pro-Trailer Backup ****. The following picture shows the Drive Mode Select (2H, 4H, 4A, 4L) ****, under it is the Pro-Trailer Backup ****, and under that is the Trailer Brake Controller.

 

I missed the drive mode select ****. I saw **** and thought trailer back up ****. Good catch

 

There's a connector right behind the removable pocket that you plug the brake controller in and as said it has to be programmed.

 

I had assumed mine had the brake controller because my last 2 trucks did a 2011 and 2013 and my 2016 does not I cannot believe some of the dumb ***** stuff Ford pulls.

I don't get it at all! Do you guys? I guess I will get factory one and install looks easy but I don't think I want to do flashing of it.

 

It seems really crazy that the brake controller is not included in any tow package. This had to be some marketing person's bad decision.

 

Incorrect.The max tow package includes the brake controller. There are other packages in the Lariat and upper trim that include it. If you have access to forscan installing the controller will cost you $100.
