Default 2016 f150 2.7 engine

I have a 2016 f150 2.7 engine. I was driving down the highway and the temp gauge shot up and started over heating. I stopped immediately and got it towed home. I did notice some coolant but not much and it seems to be coming out of the reservoir tank. I changed out the thermostat stat and when I went to crank the truck on the temp gauge was still in the red. It’s been hours and still reading in the red. The truck does start, makes a small whining noise temporarily and it doesn’t seem like the hoses are getting hot or building up pressure. I understand it could be the water pump but no visible leaks. What I don’t understand why is the gauge still reading high!!!! Help!!! Any help is very much appreciated!!!

If it were mine, I'd undo the battery for a while.

I did. Left it disconnected for at least 30 minutes hoping it would reset but it didn’t.

Possibly the CHT (Cylinder Head Temperature) Sensor. There have been many documented failures. Ford treats it as a throw-away item. Once removed they recommend replacing it.

Looking into the cylinder temp sensor, that one I found but it could also be engine coolant sensor and I can’t seem to locate that sensor.

Here is a similar thread from a couple of weeks ago. It may be of some help?
