Default 2016 Ecoboost - Overheating

Howdy y'all.

Just got my truck back from the dealership. Truck started to get hot / close to overheating while driving. Noticed the temp would display the temp numbers and increase while on the gas. I would see it get as high as 250*. Dropped it off on Friday afternoon, got it back Wednesday afternoon. $6700 for a plethora of issues. AHAHAHAH

Truck milage = 106K

1) Overheating: Coolant / Oil lines on both turbos leaking and needed replacement. They replaced the filters and seals on the turbos. They also replaced the thermostat as it was not operating correctly.
2) Drive train: Leaking rear seals on the axle. Leaking CV boot. Transaxle seal leaking.
3) HVAC: Blending module inside cab was not actuating the lower part for proper HVAC functionality.
4) Engine: Overheating caused premature plug wear. Replaced plugs with new and gapped to specs.

Just so everyone is aware, these turbo systems while being amazing to use when driving / towing, add up repair costs dramatically. As much as I really treasure this truck, tossing $6K at it to go 200K miles doesn't seem prudent.

Sounds like they may not have bled the air out of the cooling system. Or used the wrong or a bad thermostat.

Good luck
Tom

What’s the cost breakdown for all the repairs? Seems like you started with one issue that would’ve been fixed by the new/updated thermostat, and they got you for a bunch of leaks?

your conclusion stating the turbos aren’t a good fit for long term seems a bit off since a lot of the issues weren’t turbo related…and some folks live with small leaks on an 8+year old truck? I get the mileage is low, but you have to factor in age as well.

Especially since most turbos can last the life of the truck. Every diesel pickup made in the last 20+ years has a turbo and I'm not seeing many turbodiesel owners crying about their turbos going out.

I'll post the breakdown later today as it's sitting on my desk at home. What started with what I thought would be a simple fix, replace the thermostat, became a laundry list of things.

I agree, I could have lived with some of the leaks, but I plan on keeping this truck to 200K miles. It's a personal goal of mine. I usually trade my vehicles in around 100K.

It wasn't an air bubble in the cooling system to my knowledge, as all the work listed above was performed at the same time. They did replace the thermostat, but I don't which one used. I sure hope it was the redesigned one.

Truck is running good after the visit, so that's a positive.

3.5 or 2.7? If you can get to 200k on that $6k that would be a steal considering the price of a new one. I'm in the same boat with my 2016 3.5 @ 113k and trying to take it to 200k+ Have to take it in for valve covers next week. Did the vaccum pump and that didnt fix it. I might drop a 3.5 crate motor and new turbos when this one gives out. Would still be considerably cheaper than a new one.

Exactly! I used to be very handy and do all these repairs myself on prior cars. This one has me feeling like I lost my man card. AHAHHAHAHA
