Have a 17 150 Lariat Scab with the moon roof on order, due in 08/24/17.
Should I insist it be raining on the delivery day, & refuse to take the truck if it's leaking ?
Thoughts ??
.

They probably would refuse to do a high pressure test.

Since it's not designed to prevent high pressure I doubt you would find any dealer that would be willing to do a high pressure test.

That wouldn't be necessary, as I'm not a car wash person.
I would expect it to not leak in the rain..

I agree, because I am sure Ford has a formula for distance traveled for a raindrop, which could be greater than the design can handle!

Its a garbage design, simply put!

Rain at 70 mph is almost high pressure.

It may leak in the rain, as long as the drain tubes are working properly it is fine.

I wouldn't worry about a Supercab moonroof. The problems you hear about most involve the dual panel roof on the Supercrew.

I can only speak from my own experience but even after 2 major fails of the drain system in 2 years I'm still not sorry I got the moon roof. I am very disappointed in Ford though for not telling buyers that a periodic check of the drainage system should be included as a part of the buyers general maintenance routine.

Other than the 2 failures I had due to a blocked drain I've driven my truck in major rainstorms and never had a leak in the cab. I never use drive thru car washes but in regularly washing my truck with high pressure hoses I've never had a leak.

In reading posts in this forum and others all over
the internet some buyers have clear defects with their moon roofs. If you're sitting in the cab in a rainstorm and there's constant dripping in to the drain rails all over the place that's definitely a defect.

I'd ask the dealer to run a hose over the roof for a minute or two and if you see major dripping in to the drain rail that's a red flag. If you notice just 1 or 2 drops that would be viewed as normal by design and the drain system should keep your cab dry assuming the lines stay open.

If you get it I'd recommend testing the drain lines at least twice a year to make sure none of them are blocked and the system functions like it should. It only takes 5 minutes and a cup of water to let you know if there's a blockage.

Just like one of the other posters here said I also think it's a crap design but Ford's crap doesn't stink anymore than the rest of the car companies because they all seem to be designed this way anymore. The internet is loaded with similar complaints about numerous make and model vehicles including Cadillac, Mercedes and BMW.

Also for what it's worth I owned 2 F150's with moon roofs prior to this truck and never had a leak with either of them. This is the 1st panoramic roof I've had though so it stands to reason, more glass more chance to have a problem.

Good luck on your purchase!

I had a 2015 with the twin panel, I switched for the same truck without as my problem was not just water leaking in the drain trays but somehow i would get horrible condensation and moisture in the cab after. After much fuss and discussion as well as sunroof replacement and adjustment i was able to get a 2017 with no sunroof. Not 2 months later my wife needed a different vehicle due to our newborn son coming and her Jeep Wrangler not a good baby vehicle. She had to have a sunroof (something about ladies and sunroofs), low and behold the sunroof on the Jeep Grand Cherokee is basically identical to the twin panel on the new f-150. I warned her as i ran my hand through the drain trays and found road grime and grit but she got it anyway. Needless to say this type of roof system seems to leak more so than a standard sunroof, but they all leak and hopefully drain out. Recently riding in her jeep in the rain, I reached up and found water in the tray system. I showed her because she was always bad mouthing the Ford, saying it was the dumbest decision we ever made, I just smiled and said I guess it must be a jeep thing as well.

Default Same Leaking Moonroof, 2016 XLT

I have a 2016 with a similar leak that I recently noticed. I saw it by chance while stopped in a parking lot in the rain. The next day the bug shield at the front of the moonroof was soaked. I spoke at length with a representative from Ford (not the dealership), who advised me that this should not be occurring. The track and drain holes are a safeguard in case leaks occur as to not damage the interior of the vehicle. In my case the dealership is replacing both the static and moving panels as the seals and glass are one unit. Will see if the problem is solved, but for how long, next time may not be under warranty..
