In hindsight I have made some bad choices and wanted to let people know that 1st gen 2.7 Ecoboost engines are backordered with no firm delivery date. Dealership near me says maybe mid-January but that is just their best guess.
The rest of my story; I will try to make it as short as possible but its not easy:
I purchased a used 2017 with the 2.7 engine. Ran great, good power, good fuel economy. I put money into fixing some things. I wanted to keep it long term. It used a bit of coolant, which in hindsight is a major red flag for any ecoboost engine, but I was not aware of that. I thought it must be a leak, like a water pump.
Shop near me, not dealership, at first could not find any leak. Later they took the exhaust off the turbo, saw coolant on the passenger side, so they replaced a turbo. It was still losing coolant after this "fix". They did more checking and found that the passenger side head had a crack. The engine was bad. People say the 2.7 is a great engine, but I'm not so sure. Same problem as in this youtube video so I am not alone:
I decided to maybe take a big loss and drove over to Carmax. They offered me $2000. No joke. I passed. It would have been nearly a $10k loss. My options were used engine, rebuilt engine, or new engine from Ford with 3 year unlimited miles warranty. Used is rolling the dice and the used engine could have the same flaw. Rebuilt was more expensive than a new engine from Ford. I guess that is due to labor cost.
I hated to spend the money, but I went with new. This was maybe July. New engine was great at first. Got first oil change at around 1k miles. About 2500 miles later the engine lost power when I was going to work. Lost power as in could barely move, max 15 or 20 mpg, rough, and shaking. Shop said one side of the engine was not working and making noises. Engine was toast. After some research it seems the 2.7 has two timing chains. I think one chain broke which is why one side is not running. Note, I never pushed the truck. I am older, over 50, and I never floor anything. I take it easy when I drive. No abuse. Also, I used premium gas the entire time for this new engine. It had oil and coolant, so no clear reason for a failure.
Shop said I had to go through Ford for warranty, which in hindsight isn't true, they pawned me off to a dealership, so I had it towed to a dealership. Dealership said the shop may have screwed up, so I had to approve to have the dealership tear into things to see if warranty would even cover this. Luckily the dealership could not find that the shop did anything wrong, and I have been approved for a replacement. Approval was Oct 22nd. I may not get a new engine until mid January. The dealership has been really good to work with. They even gave me a 1-800 number to call and bitch, but it hasn't helped. Also, Ford will not cover any loaner or rental car. I am on my own. I have had a rental this entire time which really adds up. I'm trying to find some cheap reliable car but it's not so easy. I don't want another money pit.
The dealership has the cab off waiting for the engine. Pic attached. I feel bad for the mechanic who has his spot filled, but he said he can use another spot too. Not 100% sure how that all works but everyone is frustrated.
I feel your pain. Gone through exactly what you went threw but, mine developed a tick and metal shavings in the oil pan. Mine was ordered in February and the engine didn't show up until July. This was during the fiasco a few years ago that made everything pretty much hard to get now in a timely basis. Unfortunately, the building of new engines for new vehicles takes precedence for parts for Ford to build the engine that you will eventually get. Only silver lining is that the engine will have a 3 year warranty with unlimited miles.
My warranty runs out this coming July and I'm around 40K miles on it. Still think it is a good engine and nothing humans build can't fail. If you search the forum you will find that the 2.7 is the least complained about engine vs the other offerings. I have no plans on selling the truck.
After some more digging I think I know what probably made the new engine fail: improperly torqued crankshaft pulley bolt
The mechanic/technician said the crank pulley was loose and all chewed up. Per that technician new engines come with this installed, so must have been Ford who got it wrong, not the shop.
SSM 47378 – 2015-2018 Various Vehicles – 2.7L/3.0L EcoBoost – Crankshaft Pulley Bolt Torque Procedure
During service and repair of the 2.7L/3.0L EcoBoost achieving proper torque of the crankshaft pulley bolt is critical. Incorrect torque may allow the bolt to loosen resulting in the timing gear breaking and engine damage.
Replacement of the bolt is critical to the repair.
The bolt requires a 4 stage torque procedure.
Hold the pulley using a universal holding tool OTC 4754 or equivalent.
Stage 1: 225 Nm (166 lb.ft)
Stage 2: Loosen 360°
Stage 3: 35 Nm (26 lb.ft)
Stage 4: 270°.
Refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM) Section, 303-01.
The bolt torque procedure can be found in the crankshaft front seal removal and installation procedure or in the engine assembly procedure.

I think you misunderstood, which is maybe a bit my fault for the long post.
I bought a used truck and that original engine was bad. Yes, it happens, just bad luck.
I did buy a new engine that came from Ford, with warranty. That new engine has gone bad in between 3000 and 4000 miles.
Ford has accepted responsibility and will give me a new engine under warranty. I was informed of this October 22nd.
The 2.7 engine is back ordered. I may not get the new engine until mid to late January.
Ford will not help me out in terms of a loaner or pick up rental costs. I am on my own.
Just a PSA that if you need an engine, maybe think again. At the very least it will take a very long time to get one.
Just curious, what was the mileage on the truck when you got it? As a side note, I would not be a fan of a shop that:
1 Misdiagnosed the cracked head.
2. Changed the engine without checking the crankshaft pulley, charged me a full price engine swap AND dropped me like a hot potato.
I think you have been a good sport about all of this. I doubt I would be as pleasant. I think I would be looking for about 10 lbs. of flesh by now.
Good luck, hope things straighten out a bit going forward.
Mileage when I got the truck: 147k
Yes, kind of high, but I had read stories of this engine going hundreds of thousands of miles so I wasn't too worried. Wrong assumption on my part.
No, I'm not going back to that shop. I'm done with them.
So one guy at the dealership said that he thought they might not get an engine until mid January. At that point I had spent over $3000 on a rental car, ($50 day for over 2 months), so I decided to buy something cheap to get by for a while, and then probably sell it when I get my truck back. Somehow I started watching some youtube videos of old GMT800 trucks, and I bought a 2001 Silverado that isn't in the best of shape to put it mildly. 4.8 V8, extended cab, short box, 4x4. I bought it Friday the 19th. The next day, Saturday, I got new tires for it. After that I was at a mechanic talking about getting some things done. The dealership called and said they had my engine and I could probably get the truck back Tuesday. Horrible timing. If they had just called 24 hours earlier...
I did pick it up Tuesday, so now I have 2 trucks. One good one, I hope, and this Silverado that I now don't know for sure what to do with. I did go back to the dealer a few days later, the coolant was down just a bit, but I think it just "burped" I think it's called. It probably had some air pocket, and my driving got that out of it. So I think that's the end of my story, or at least I hope so.
