Default 12 volt accessory outlets

My 2016 XL, regular cab has two 12 volt accessory sockets, both covered by a hinged lid. The sockets themselves look identical, like the typical socket that accepts a cigarette lighter or bullet shaped USB plug or other accessory.
One is just above the never to be used ashtray and covered by a small, square lid. The other is just to the right of the radio tuning **** and covered by a much larger lid marked "12 volt." Its socket may be a little deeper.

I'd just assume they're interchangeable except at page 162 of the not always helpful Owner's Manual there is a warning about not plugging 'electrical accessories into the cigar lighter socket.' I have no cigar lighter, just an empty socket.

Does anyone here know what the heck they are talking about and why I couldn't use both 12 volt power sockets interchangeably?

cigar lighter is wired with other stuff like the TLC connector. the 12V accessory plug is its own circuit and fuse. doesnt really matter unless something you plug in blows the cigar fust the data port wont work. not a big issue but makes sense for the warning.

What he said ^^^.

In these newer trucks, are the outlets switched? Is one (or more) constant 12V regardless of key position?

Thanks.

You can change the time out using Forscan.. But I don't find it dependable.. So I have a engine fuse box mod that keeps what ever one I want on 24/7.

Thanks. I was more curious than anything. I'm adding an outlet bank inside my console, and am trying to decide which/how many to make switched vs. constant power.
