How can i tell what year transmissions would work for an automatic 4x4 4.6 V8 on a 2000 F150?

Is it possible to replace the auto trans with a 5 speed??

 

I did some research on this and it looks like the truck is outfitted with a 4r70W. Ford truck site says trans code is 44u, 44e, 44m and type is 4,5 4.0min, 5.0 max. Not sure what that means.

4wd transmissions are hard to come by in working condition. It looks like I could take a similar year mustang automatic from the 6cyl or GT and do a rebuild/swap. keeping all the parts from the donor trans except for the final shaft which is different.

I would like to persue the manual trans, but I think that will be a headache.

Anybody have suggestions?

I found a 97 4wd transmission. There appears to be changes that occured in 98 to make those and later trasnmissions differnet. Changes in valve body and electrical connectors.

Anyone put a 97 4wd trans in a 98 or later ( in my case a 2000) with success)?
