Possible Engine Swap
Hey everyone;
While going through the forum and looking at so much of the good work in here, I'm starting to think about the possibility of taking my 93 I6 out and putting in a 351W...my questions are:
1. will it even fit?
2. if so can the motormounts be re-used or wil I have to fashion or
modify the setup to acceopt the 351W?
3. will there be any cutting or modding of any fender wells or firewalls?
3. what will be needed to make it compatitble with the computer or will
I have to get a new chip?
4. I'm betting that the new set up will work best with dual exhaust so...
is the 93 able to accept a dual system set up having been a single
exhaust with the straight?
5. if any of you have any ideas or input I would really appreciate you
sending it...
Thanks

The 351 option wasn't dropped from F150's until 97 when Ford introduced the 5.4 to replace it...just like they introduced the 4.2 replace the much better 300. Why don't you just tear down your 300 and put a new cam shaft in it, port the heads/intake, bore it out a bit. Be a nice little I6 that could easily keep up with the 351.
hhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm...never thought about that as much of an option...given what you've covered, it sounds like there would be more to swapping it than it would be worth with the possibility of changing motor mounts and whatnot...any ideas as to the costs of those options...knowing different regional economies, a rough guess is fine...if not, no worries...I'd suspect that there would be other mods to make as well, such as CAI and exhaust system...plus some I probably haven't thought of...

A 351 swap would be doable and since the trucks got the engine to begin with (I'm not sure about the transmission though) the the mounts should sit on the frame in the OE location. You don't see many tuned I6's running around anymore though. The 300 is certainly a good engine, in fact it used to be used as Ford's premier heavy haul engine back when it was introduced and barely made 120 hp. My grandfather has had a few of them, tells me if they were bored and machined right they would out run nearly all of the V8's.

hhhhhmmmmm...the tuned I-6 would certainly be a sleeper huh...thanks for the link too...I've seen some 351's for sale for around $1300 or so and I'm almost always looking to get the most bang for the buck...my grand-daddy always told me that if I could get the slant 6 or straight 6 to get it since it was almost always a dependable engine...that's why I got the Ford to begin with since they were the only one to offer the I-6 in the new (at that time) truck...glad I did...my truck is what I'd call a "general purpose daily driver"...not looking at building a "pull a house off its foundation" type of a specialty towing truck per se nor am I looking to set any speed records but by the same token I'd like to get as much of the potential out of it as I can along the lines of a dialy driver - with any sort of decent gas meileage, occassional towing, load up the bed once in a while type...but if/when I enclose the bed (plans and bill of materials are almost firmed up) there might be less of the "load up the bed once in a while" happenin'... especially if I do indeed paint it (which it needs) and fix the rust and dents (which it needs even more...lol)...I figure that "IF" I can do most of the repairs or at least most of the "grunt work" then I can get it back into really good shape (it's running and in "decent" shape now but certainly nothing to brag about) for around $5-7K once I finally get back stateside...right now I'm just getting my "wish list" of necessary and optional work that the ol' boy needs put together...the engine was actually replaced about 3-4 years ago with a Jasper I-6 (long story) so the warranty has expired long before the miles did...so, the engine is now open for ideas...lol...thanks again...Rich.
