Not necessarily on the shavings. This engine with 181K, could be worn to where copper is showing and causing the knock yet no visible amount of metal showing in the oil drain pan. Look closely at the removed oil, does it have a copper coloring to it. Thats bad.

Here is something to do, in fact this is something everyone who is going to purchase a used vehicle, or engine should do. That is have a sample of the oil tested to see what is in it. You can tell a great deal about the condition of the engine by doing this. It will tell you the engine has worn main bearings, bad connecting rod bearings etc. The outfit below does it for $15.95 There are many other outfits that do it. I used this when I was an Army Combat Engineer. We routinely sent in oil samples to get a handle on the condition of the engines we where maintaining. You could tell by the report if the engine needed to be sent in and overhauled.

well i sucked it up and brought my truck to the ford dealership to get checked out, i wish i never had. They said they heard at least two piston wrist pins were gone. i don't understand the truck has been making that noise for over a year and i towed 5,600 lbs from florida to mass about 4 months ago and it runs fine. idk what i'm going to do lol.
any suggestions? besides a hand grenade

Obviously, the noise won't fix itself, if they are correct it will probable still run for a while, at least untill you bite the bullet and replace it or get another truck. As I remember wrist pin noises, it would flutter in and out with light acceleration/deceleration of the pedal. Just wondering with yours.

i only hear mine when the truck idles, when i give it gas i can't really hear it, well that might have to do with no exhaust anyways lol. the noise i bet it still there, but it doesn't get louder with higher RPM. idk if i should get a new engine, or get a new truck, idk. but if i get a new truck who is going to buy a truck that the wrist pins are bad?

Well,
Whenever I have any work done to my truck it costs over 200$, usually in the 500 to 700$ range. I'm no mechanic, but I would bet on 600-1000$ if they have to go in and take the engine apart to fix anything.

Hey jwg2089, introduce yourself and join the fun. Year, model, and engine does help. Just messing with you. What kind of noise do you have, and dont forget to tell us what you are driving? Engine noises can be nothing or can be fatal if left unattended.
