The camshaft requires lubricant and if the oil leak was bad enough wear occurs at the camshaft areas of lift or journals. Visual inspection may find the wear. Any cutting on the camshaft or contact parts is not good and will require replacement parts.

I just bought an 07 F150 a couple months back. When I go on the highway for a while and go to a stop sign it has this exact sound. I'll rev it up and it will stop. Should I worry about this yet?

Another 5.4 mess
Hi Gang,
Just joined because I am working on my brothers 2004 F150 with the 3 valve 5.4. Here's a run down:
130,000 miles
Not taken care of as far as oil changes etc.
It ran fine at highway speed.
Had the typical diesel rattle and rough idle.
Supposedly had new VCT solenoids 2 years ago.
Had new timing set and phasers last year.
I purchased the Livernoise full lock out kit and programmer to solve the problem once and for all.
Started it the other day to move it into the garage and it was tapping and missing, which it wasn't doing previously.
Tore the drivers side apart today and found the hook or tang on the end of the phaser spring is gone.
Took out the VCT sol. and it had metal filings in the screens, they are steel as they cam off with a magnet.
Also found out it has part number 3L3E-68297, I don't think this is the new part number based on what I read.
Lots of gunk under the valve cover.
Is this thing worth putting back together? My original thought was to install the lockout and try to get another 50,000 miles from it. I guess I could get new phasers or just the spring and still install the lockout and see if it works. The only thing I would be out would be the lockout and a phaser. I can't return the lockout kit.
Any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks
