Butterfly Valve
I'm not an engine guy, but I just bought an 86 f150 4x4 300 6cyl and the guy said it has a new carburator but for some reason it doesn't have a butterfly valve on the choke? How big of a deal is this. He pours gas in it to start it right up. However, I'd like to get this fixed and I'm not an engine guy and have no clue what hes talking about. Any help for a ignorant engine newbie is greatly appreciated.
Hi there newbie, with the choke plate missing and unknown associated problems with the choke, suggest buying a rebuilt exchange carb at the local parts house. My self, I prefer NAPA. There are others, but thats my choice when original Ford is not available.
There are a bunch of guys on this site with that engine, perhaps they will chime in with other ideas.

I have never seen replacement parts of this type available. My memory is not helping out here, are you sure this is a carb and not an early vintage of fuel injection with the injector mounted in a carb type body, like the two injector CFI 5.0 engines?
if this truck is a 86 it should be injected not carbed. Do a little research cause this doesnt seem to add up. Quick warning if it is a throttlebody injected engine if you have to add gas to get it started I can almost guarantee the high pressure pump has went bad and wont pump up enough to prime the injectors. this particuliar setup has 2 fuel pumps one in the tank and one mounted either low on the firewall or on the framerail close to the engine compartment. get a haynes manual and start looking its a old truck and it sounds like it has a tale to tell
