are 97 4.2's interchangeable with 2001's ?

are 97 4.2's interchangeable with 2001's ?
I posted this over in the 97 to 2003 F150 section with no luck so I'm hoping someone can help me here.
my 97 f150 with a 4.2 v6 decided to give up the ghost and it blew the intake manifold gasket dumping coolant into #1 passenger side cylinder, after seeing the state of the engine (looked like more than a few years abuse from previous owners...........I'd only had the truck 3 months when this happened) I decided to switch the motor out, the wrecking yard sent a motor which was supposed to be a 97 but turned out to be a 2001, my mechanic decided to drop it in anyway (after switching intake manifolds and plenums due to wiring harness difficulties and sensor location difficulties)
We fired it up yesterday and judging by the exhaust fumes there's coolant getting into the intake somewhere, my question is, is the 97 intake manifold compatable with the 2001 block? I'm wondering wether all the ports and passages lined up properly or did we miss something (the tube which runs from just behind the oxygen sensor on the exhaust manifold to the egr valve had different hook ups and we went with the old one.
Has anyone else tried this switch?
