I always thought Diesels were for towing..and although they are much more efficient for towing than any gas engine, my friend's Eco is doing a great job of imitation. He hauls a big fifth wheel camper and that little engine really pulls it hard.
He has run into a few relability issues and it has been to the garage a few too many times but that is to be expected on a relatively new powerplant that is non-aspirated.
Sadly he has decided to trade it and get an F350..too bad the F150 only had 30,000kms on it. I haven't had the urge to move forward from my Heritage but if I do, Ford makes a great product that makes it tough to decide.

I was hoping the fuel mileage was better.. I currently own a 2008 f250 lariat diesel. When I tow 10000lb travel trailer 12 mpg flat highway or city. Around town I get 15 and highway driving average 19 to 21 depending on going 65 or 85..... I have had zero issues with the truck but I no longer tow. The truck is slightly over tuned. I push 400 hp and about 710 ftlbs at just under 2000 rpm. This my first super duty, I have to say this was one of the first 6.4 off the line with a manufacture date of July 1997, job #1 plant. I wish they would release a v6 diesel...

I'll add my two cents as a 2year ecoboost owner that tows regularly up to 10k:
comparing the eco to the 5.0 isnt fair. id put it against the 6.2.
Ive never driven a gas truck that felt so much like a diesel either. My buddy has a new 6.7 cummins and while my truck does have half the torque (he has 800), it makes it in almost the same power band and tows like a beast.
empty, mine eats his for lunch 0-60 and in mpg.
The eco does get bad mpg when towing, but youll make up for it when driving empty. a larger displacement engine like the 6.2 might do better mpg than the eco towing, but wont come close empty.
empty ill usually average between 17-19 on a tank.
towing ill average 9-10 pulling 10k and like 14-16 pulling 2-4k
I had no idea a 3.5L could be capable of that kind of power and I love my eco. Id never trade it for another gas truck. (id totally trade for a cummins though ahaha)

Well In my place the 4.0 would have me, at the push far more than a 3.5. In other circumstances the opposite, would assess real. I still have no concept, why anyone efforts to evaluate the 3.5 and the 4.0.

I'm really on the fence.
I drive a lot of highway miles, my 98 F150 4x4 off road has over 250,000 and gets almost 15 averaging 72 mph. But it won't last forever. Only gripe is the gas tank isn't very big - 300 miles and I'm gettin' nervous for gas.
I rarely tow anything.
I drove an FX4 eco the other day and was very happy EXCEPT: it seemed to stumble pulling out the driveway of the dealership and a little bit from a stop sign. Got back in my 97 Chrysler minivan, hit the gas to go and about squealed the tires.
And, I've heard the horror stories about turbos going out. If I like the truck I probably will keep it for a long time, so the maintenance thing is a concern.
Wish I could get a real mileage comparison between the 5.0 and the eco (without the BS meter showing up in the RED).
You guys must know different dealers than I do; they don't seem to want me to spend a lot of time driving & thinking or comparing multiple trucks. They prefer to pick one truck and then SELL it to me. TODAY.
Anyone expecting any significant change in this dilemma with the 2014 models?
thanks.

PCRogers, I ran a full tank of fuel through my 5.0 with a 3.73 diff. Drove from west central Mn to Duluth Mn and back on the tank, about 400 miles round trip. Dash said 18.9 and the calculator said 18.3. I only have 780 miles on the new truck. Reset the trip meter for local driving and the dash now reads 13.8. I drive 2 miles to work. It can only get better. Hope this helps.
