10 speed transmission

10 speed transmission
Does anyone have longevity information on the 10 speed transmission. It seems to me to be a engineering marvel and maybe a maintenance nightmare. I have my doubts that 10 speeds are really necessary. I have a 2018 with a 10 speed and a 2017 with a 6 speed.

My 2019 with 10 spd and 5.0 has 46k and has been in the shop for 2 weeks already, valve body was replaced but didn't fix the issue. Now they say they have to "go into it".
It got to where it would delay-shift into 2nd so hard it would "bark" the 35" KO2s first thing in the morning and after it had been sitting for 6-8 hours. It also feels like it's in neutral for about 3 seconds before shifting from 5-6 or maybe 6-7 (around 40mph).
This is my first Ford since my little 1990 Ranger I bought new, starting to wonder if I made a mistake getting rid of my 16 Frontier...
I know it's a Necropost but...

I'll join the necropost.
My 2018 bought used in 2019 with 14k miles from dealership. Transmission seems to be going out at 40k miles. Just found out that ford says it is 3mos out of warranty. I drove 100mi or so since the warranty ended because I usually drive a different car in town. So, I know the problem existed while it was under warranty, but Ford is not interested in addressing it. I'm wondering if the code reader they have can show the codes are from while it was in warranty, even if so, I doubt it would matter. I had no CEL or anything like that, just noticed a grinding scraping sound start on the Friday before thanksgiving. Never had a vehicle this new with such major problems. I liked the truck as was going to buy another ford based on the prior experiences, but I'm sure rethinking that plan.

135,000 on 2017 3.5 Eco with 10 speed
Over the holidays it sat and it did the same thing - now it has 135k miles and is out of warranty so I brought it to very thorough trans shop I used for 10 years. I have 12 cars and also managed a small fleet at work so I am prudent in knowin* what shops can do what. The trans shop let it sit and saw same thing. They confirmed it has latest software, there are no new updates for adding check valves for torque convertor drain back, etc and other than long term cold start delay that only happens if sits for 4 days, they see no issues.
Because I tow a toyhauler from OH out to West Coast or my boat to NC, I asked for a price on new tranny (new Ford tranny with 3 year/100k mile warranty) labor, fluids, programing, etc was just over $7k. They are not stating I need one, but that’s worst case option as once I leave home, I am totally reliant on the truck to get my buddies and I through our vacation. I drive 30k miles per year and I used to be able to trade up trucks and get my dads ford employee discount every 100k miles or so but Covid has that program cancelled and truck prices are all jacked up. So I decided to keep this truck to 200-300k as I do with my other vehicles and some of our fleet vehicles
Anyway, I have to make a decision to make as all the trucks have been flawless up to 150k miles so going to 300k may turn out to be frustrating. I’ll take an ecoboost 3.5 forever, and a 10 speed in my next truck as they hauls *** & trailers so damn well. And if I have to spend $7k every 150k miles for a tranny that performs this well, I won’t be totally pissed. But I wish I didn’t have such long, critical trips and could simply let the trans run until failure…then I would really know if it’s major and if they would make it to 300k miles and rare cold start delay is non-issue. A local breakdown is no big deal, but 6 dirt bikes in a toyhauler as you and your buddies are riding Utah does not allow you to risk a breakdown and ruin everyone’s vacation.
Anyone had a “real” high mileage failure on a 10 speed that really uses their truck for truck stuff? My tranny shop says the 6 & 10 speeds have been awesome and most trans concerns are usually false and related to engine management systems putting the truck into various levels of limp modes.

I just bought a used ‘19 with 170k miles on it. It had air bags installed on it and hauled a trailer. I also haul a work trailer with it. 3.5 w/ 10 speed. It was shifting a little rough into 5th. I changed the filter and 7 quarts of fluid. It’s running smoothly like it should. They say to change the filter every 150k but I think I’m going to drain about 5-6 quarts out every 30k-40k and refill a few times since the fluid was so dark. I’d stick with 50k intervals for swaps. The fluid was pretty broken down at 170 even though the carfax said ford serviced the transmission.

It's not great, i don't think I'll keep my truck past warranty. The 10 speed is Ok.. the early ones had issues, the post 2021 have gotten a little better, but still not great.. My 2019 died at 60k and was replaced under extended warranty, I honestly think the majority of it's issues are due to the terrible programming. But my Ford mechanic friend said to change the fluid and filter every 45k miles, same as the front and read diff.. So we'll see if i have the same issues with my 23.. if i do, my next truck will be a Ram.

Keep it! 40k and my past 2018 10 speed started acting up. 2nd time had it towed and to many excuses made me part ways and bought a Toyota.
good luck
