usually to remove the belt, you just stick a 1/2 inch possibly? ratchet into the belt tensioner and pull to relieve pressure on the belt and remove belt
although it might also be 3/8, i am not sure about the 4.2 engine, but thats how it is done on most vehicles these days.

4.2 V6's
Agree that the V6's of the past 10 or 15 years do as well as the small V8s of previous years. One more point I might throw my 2 cents in on....the TORQUE is the real pulling power. Especially on the old inline 6's. The inlines actually produce more torque than the same size V6 engines. The inline motors have a 120 degree cycle versus the 90 degree for V-type motors. Have had a couple of Fords with the 4.9/300cid 6 cylinder motors as power plants, both carbed and fulie models. No complaints with them.. althought the fuel injected models were certainly better performers. Would definitely appreciate a 6 cylinder specific forum.
My '98 F150 has the 4.2 with 5 speed stick, and hasa 192k on the odomete. Not driving it for the moment, as it's leaking oil to the tune of a quart every 100 or so miles. . Replaced the rear main seal, and the pan seal. Rear main is dry, pan seal not so much. Parked it for now. I'm trying to decide on trying a new seal or since the motor will be coming out, and the amount of miles on the block, going for a reman longblock, maybe get another 190,000 out of the truck.
Looking forward to sharing info on the 6 motors!

mlarky,
I've had the inline in a truck as well...and well, It'll pull it, or pull it apart. Great motors and when properly maintained, will go on forever. Unfortunately, someone ended the trucks life, long before the motor was ready to give up the ghost.
As for the 4.2, It's too soon to tell, but it seems to be a pretty tough six banger.

Most folks that frequent the 2004 to 2008 forum know I'm a huge fan of the 4.2 V6. I have an automatic behind it. It currently has 82K, and I fully expect to get well over 200K. Tows decent, I average over 21 MPG on the highway (measured on a SCANGUAGE II). I've installed a K&N "semi" CAI kit, a free flow muffler (left the rest of the exhaust intact), and installed the Superchips tune (changed the chiftpoints; firmed them up). I don't have any hassles with plug changes (changed them about 5K ago), no engine noises, and just recently installed an electric fan setup: the Mark VII electric fan with a DCController. I've noticed cooler A/C temps at idle; no seat of the pants performance gain with this electric fan setup. I will post any real gains in mileage (I want to run about 8 to 10 tankfulls to see if theres any real increase).
Big fan of the 4.2 V6 in my STX.
