I would LOVE to get 14 mpg towing a lesser load. All trucks drop mpg when towing a load. The difference is the available power of EB. The 5.0 will tow good but the EB has significantly more TQ and thus trumps the 5 in towing ability.
I actually have a 5.0 in my 2012 Lariat Screw, 5.5 covered bed, 3:55 gears. I get usually above 20 highway unloaded and about 15 - 16 pulling a rounded front 12 x 7 box trailer loaded. So I have no confidence in your being pretty confident!

Life time average on the truck is sitting at 21.4 I reset it the day I picked it up from the dealer new. I've pulled the trailer some 500 miles now and that is what has lowered the average some. It was at 21.5 before the Trailer. Truck has just shy of 40K on it now. Most miles have been, up until I retired a few months ago, highway miles. Now since I don't drive distances that much I expect lifetime average will slowly drop. I also didn't drive it that much last summer but drove it all winter. In the winter from hell we had last year! I think it was sitting at 21.8 before that.

Would I buy my truck again? Absolutely, would I buy an EB this time? Not a chance! Do I wish I had towing mirrors? Yes lol. I did put the factory brake controller on and I'm glad I did. It integrates nicely into the dash and I like that the truck computer now can control braking and sway.

No argument the EB has more torque. But the idea that the 5.0 can't pull a load is just total BS. Would I want to pull a 9000 lb trailer with it hell no. But I sure as hell wouldn't want to pull one with an EB either. I'd want a real truck under me. Just because you can pull something doesn't mean you should. No half ton truck should be pulling those kinds of loads on a regular basis. Get a real truck if you intend to pull those kinds of weights on a regular basis. They make heavy duty trucks for a reason.

Stepping off my soap box now

Thumbs down 2011 F150 SuperCab 3.5L EcoBoost Loss of Power:

My driving is mostly highway, long distant driving. The problem is loss of power (near stall) on hard acceleration ‘trying’ to pass.

(24,540/01.21.13) Replaced cac, shield and catalytic converter. Warranty

(Miles /Date ?) Replaced air deflector and push pins.Warranty

(56,431/03.10.14) Replaced #4 ignition coil. $284

(62,196/08.11.14) Installed “revised” air deflector. $208

(70,7069/12.27.14) Replaced #2 ignition coil and (6) plugs. $305

Status 06.13.15 (80,000 miles) It happened "again" after 4 1/2 hours driving in rainy conditions while attempting to pass a complete loss of power trying to accelerate to pass!! After 'drying' out, its running great. The Ford dealership has no suggestion on how to fix the problem, but wanted to charge me to check it out!!

I see you posted another video...but to being with, wouldn't the fix be, is to replace ALL the timing components?

I installed a billet grill to cover the lower opening on my 2013 EB. I was afraid a rock or a bird might crash into the intercooler and damage the unit. Mileage is at 32,000km, admittedly low mileage but so far no issues. I keep an eye on the temp gauges and have not noticed anything unusual. Have towed a 6000lb travel trailer to Arizona from BC, 7000km round trip with no issues.

Anyone out there using a billet grill? Any issues?
I put a billet grill on my 2011 after about at year - I was afraid I'd get a rock in the intercooler - the fins already had a big dent when I got it. I didn't notice any problems with it up until I traded it a couple of weeks ago but admittedly i didn't tow with it but i did several trips a year with a 1 ton pallet of wood pellets in the bed. I was watching the temp gauges ( engine and transmission and didn't see any increases. It's interesting Ford is making a big deal of this as I heard one of the fixes for the early eco loss of power situations was to cover up a section of the intercooler as the early ones were too efficient (and big) and were causing moisture in the air to condense out and foul out cylinders. I never had this problem but I'm in PA so the humidity isn't as high here. I think Ford just doesn't want us messing with our trucks so they make everything an excuse to void the warranty. I hear they were doing the same thing with cold air kits and mufflers until Ford Racing started selling them.

Ya, if buying used stay away from 2011's ecoboost, and buying new/used I'll never buy first year mode. And never go by the factory oil change intervals, ecoboost oil changes every 5k miles at least.

I love my 2013 ecoboost, love it even more after custom tune.

I've got a 2013 and have been very pleased with it. The gas mileage, not so much as people told me the great mileage I was going to get. But as the engine has gotten miles on it (36K) and I use the cruise and keep it at 71~, depending on the outside temperature it gets a little over 20mpg. Power wise, I owned one of the last 2002 Camaro SS's built. It would put you back in the back seat if you jumped on the accelerator. I jumped on the accelerator on the 3.5L Ecoboost and it brought back memories of my SS. The only problem I have had is getting the oil changed. Know one seems to know how to secure the splash guard under the engine (except for the Mr. Goodwrench shop). Even the Ford dealership failed to secure it properly (I keep extra lock bolts and clips handy). All in all I like the engine and the truck.

Just got back from an 800 mile RT road trip pulling my 6 x 12 enclosed air brake. My 2014 EB has 3.15 gearing, and it pulled the trailer like it wasn't there. It liked to hunt gears due to the gearing, but that's it. Plenty of power, MPG could have been better, but again, having gears more for towing would have helped. Overall MPG was 11.

Getting 14-15 I would be ecstatic! And someone complained about getting Extremely great gas mileage towing? I am pleased getting 11!

BTW I had 2 4.6 V8's that knocked like that starting up, and a 5.4 in an 01 F150 that knocked on start up. All due to lack of oil in the timing chain tensioners. I have also had 5 different vehicles with EB, and never had gas in the oil, and it has gotten pretty cold here!

Question

Guess I'm really screwed in a TREMOR with the 4.10 ratio ? ?

but when your complaining about MPG can you please list your rear end gear ratio, some people have no idea that a 3.73 will GREATLY affect your mileage, but i wanted towing so i went 3.73

I have a motto, gas will never get back to the price it was a couple years ago, therefore your getting the cheapest gas you will for the next couple years so at whatever price GET IT WHILE ITS CHEAP!!!!

Just so you know, up here were paying some of the cheapest prices in Canada (Alberta) at $4.13/gallon

NO REGRETS HERE ! I bought my crewcab in 2011 as soon as I read about the EcoBoost technology. It sounded like sound technology to me and I've never been sorry. I think the 3.5L EcoBoost in the F-150 is the best power combination I've ever driven or owned. It has far more useable towing power and torque that any of my previous other bigger gas V-8s, AND the economy is not fantastic, but certainly acceptable. I now have 40K miles on it and would do it again.

I just wonder why Ford has not developed a 5.0L EcoBoost, for those of us who love the V-8 sound. While I do miss the V-8 sound but have learned to accept the V-6 drone.
