Question Yet another thing went wrong

On top of the O2 sensor problem( see link somewhere out there) there is something new. I was driving home this morning, the light changed and I went to put it in first, 5 speed manual trany. Instead of going into gear the shifter broke loose. Its rotating clockwise, looking down on it, until it hits the dash. It will rotate counterclockwise until it gets to the position it should be. It will rotate so that I can't use first gear, and have been using second to get started. The other gears can be reached, but only if I put pressure to the right while shifting. Help!!

Other posts about the lever itself needing repair, an external thing that can be done without removing the trans. A roll pin or something breaks causing the floppy lever.

Thanks, I'll look at that.
