Default 1992 4.9L I6 Exhaust

It is time to replace the exhaust on my truck. Everything behind the catalytic converter is rusty and full of holes including all pipe and muffler. It has always had the typical quiet exhaust but I am wondering if there is a combination of muffler and pipe that will give this engine a beefier, more pleasant sounding note. I figure at 4.9 L it should be capable of sounding something like a 5 L engine regardless of the differences of a I6 and a V8. Thoughts?

On these trucks I find the aftermarket for exhaust sucks. Your best bet is to go to a shop and have them do a custom y-pipe, into a 2.5-3" collector, then run that through a newer high flow cat and single chamber muffler. Put a K&N cone air filter on the intake side and it should give it a nice throaty sound.

I paid about $1000 for mine on my 5.0 - all stainless. See that little bulge right past the transmission crossmember - that's the catalytic converter, LOL. A little different than stock!

No, a 4.9L will never sound like a V8. Putting a loud exhaust on it just makes it sound sickly. Quiet is best.

My 96 has 3" cats, muffler and pipe exiting between the R rear wheel and bumper. It also has an aggressive cam and some porting. It still sounds like a 6, a butch throaty 6, but still a 6. That is the nature of the beast. It only lopes a little, again the nature of the beast. Frankly, I like that sound, but it will never ever be mistaken for a V-8

Our 6 had more the sound of a diesel when we straight piped it. It got annoying but was easily reversed.
