Why does "retarding" the timing help with pings?

I timed it at 10 degrees and drove around last night. Pretty much just watching temp gauge cause I knew it would fill up, circulate, drive around and add more.

Today drove around, accelerated onto freeway and tried accelerating at stop signs and got some pinging but not as bad. So will take it down like 9. Cheap balancer had barely noticable timing marks.
