1994 f150 5.0 - mechanic installed this and I don’t have a clue why it’s here. Any advice is appreciated!! Thanks

That sensor provides temperature information of the incoming air. It's name is an ACT sensor (air charge temperature). They are usually screwed into the intake manifold. If it was an addition, I wonder about its wiring.

The splices/scotchloks are an interesting addition, but that pigtail/harness looks OEM. Im not familiar enough with the OE configuration, but thats definitely an intake air temp sensor. Id guess that threads into the stock air filter housing or intake tube. This info is for a 5.8, but gives you an idea:

In any event, it needs to be properly installed in the intake track.

That sensor just screwed into the old airbox with a little clip
I sure do not like the scotch locks, (solder and heat shrink) is Ford authorized, considered a lasting repair

That sensor needs to be in the airstream (but it will be okay flapping in the breeze)

Ditch the 'NOT cold air intake' and go back stock if you still have the parts.
