Default '96 f150 XL

I'm new to this forum and I've recently acquired a 96 f150 4x4. I want to put a 6" lift and 36" tires on this but i have a dilemma. This trucks engine is fantastic, with only 74k miles on the entire truck, completely stock. The problem is that it has been sitting for a very long time (about 3 years) and is very rusted, the bed and cab have minimal rust around the wheel wells, but the frame and under body is very rusted, with the rear gas tank having rusted through.

as of next week I'm planning to take the bed off and get down to business hoping to remove this rust, cleaning the frame and then coating with por15. Has anyone had experience with very rusty trucks? As of right now its my daily driver and it will continue to be. I have about a week to fix the truck and hopefully clean up majority of the rust. I'll post pics of the rust when I get the chance.

as of right now I've already replaced the break lines (needed to be safe to drive) and im planning to put a new gas tank in when i work on the rust issue. Does anyone know what the rear tank size would be in this?

Welcome!

I think the rear tank is 18.9 gallons and the front is 19.8, but not 100% on that.

Welcome aboard! I've heard good things about POR15 from a customer of my store. Said it wears like iron, used it to paint his rusty frame on a 92 C1500. I plan on doing the same as you this summer. After I'm done, I'll shoot it with Waxoyl to slow the rust http://www.roversnorth.com/waxoyl/wa...revention.html .

My VW has this on it's underside, and it's held up great in 9 yrs.

thanks for the response. I'm picking up the por15 tomorrow and im hoping to get the bed off this friday. clean the frame up and start painting. I decided that I'm going to go with a 4" lift and put 35" tires on the truck. I'm hoping to swap out the bench seat for 2 normal seats at some point, i just need to find some.

I'm looking at the tuff country lift for about 600 dollars, anyone have any experience with these? and will i need anything extra when installing this?

I don't think that I'll need anything other than extensions on the brake lines.

A few more details on my truck, it has the 4.9l straight 6, automatic transmission, 8 foot bed. standard cab. This will probably turn into an update thread of sorts, and I'll try and get some pics tomorrow before work.

On a Side note, one of my oxygen sensors died, is there any way to tell which one is bad or test them?

What code did you get?

If the lift kit doesn't come with a dropped pitman arm, you will need that too.

I don't remember what the exact error code was but it was that the o2 sensor was saying there was too much oxygen, and i've been driving with it this way for 6+ months. It's happened before but the check engine light turned off after a while, I think it just needs replaced finally.
