Default truck problems

I need some help. I have a 96' f150 xlt with a 5.8 efi and 177,000 mi. the problem is that the engine dies while driving. everything is going fine and all of a sudden no power. all the electrical is still on; radio, guages, widows, ect., but when i look down the tach shows no rpms and the engine will not restart. it will turn over just fine but not start . so I coast to a stop, wait about 5 to 8 minutes then the engine starts up like nothing is wrong and i go on. right now this is happening once a day. i have replaced the crank position sensor (cps). that helped for about two days but it has started up again. so what is next. the first code readings steered me to the cps. this time it shows it again. and now after i reset the memory it hasn't registard a code even thu it has stopped on me once.

Really need to get it throw a code again. It is possible the CPS is bad again. Without knowing what kind you replaced it with it is hard to know really. All I can say is this, if it is important like the IAC, TPS, EGR, CPS don't cheap out, replace it with motorcraft if you can afford it. You will save yourself a bunch of headaches. We have been through this countless times on this forum. Certain parts just don't work well with these trucks.

On my model year series, what you describe is typical of a TFI or PIP failure. The TFI is the electrical module attached to the side of the distributor base, and the PIP is the pick-up sensor inside the distributor. There are tests for each of these so don't have to shotgun dollars on guesses.

I get foggy on the details of what changed when in the mid-90s series, though...
