I have a 1996 f150 straight 6, auto, with 81600 orig mi, my problem is sometimes when i turn the key to ignition i hear a click underneath in the back of the truck when it clicks the truck will start but sometimes it whines then the truck won't start. I had it in 2 shops and it didn't do it. When it whines it can take up to an hr before it clicks and starts. I hope someone out there has come across this and direct me in the right direction. When you say it whines, like the starter is stuck when the engine is running or the starter spins and the engine won't turn over?

 

More details - is the engine cranking but not firing or just whining and not cranking

 

the whinning noise is coming from the back off the truck. when you turn the key to the on position and you hear a click from the back off the truck it will start but if you hear a whinning noise it won't start
