Default Trouble Code Hook-up Question

I have looked at 4 different diagrams on how to hook up for the self test to find trouble codes. I'm getting mixed up with using a voltimeter and just using a wire. I just want to use a wire. I know where the self test plugs are. I just dont know which one to hook up to the negative battery and where the other wires hook up

Diagram #5 = http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13 (This mentions the w/o volt meter method.) Personally I like this method = http://www.handsontools.com/Equus-In...ol_p_5574.html (you can find them at parts stores if you call around)

It's a b*tch, but they say it gets easier the more you do it. After chasing the wrong code for two days because I miscounted, I bought a code reader w/ digital numeric display & memory hold for $20. (as you can) http://www.handsontools.com/Equus-In...ol_p_5574.html

does that one in the link you posted come with the wire attachment? or do you have to buy the extension for it?

(below the actual scanner it says "RELATED ITEMS" - do i need to buy that extension, or just the scanner???)

It's an accessory. It's nice to be able to sit behind the wheel while performing the scans, especially when it tells you to perform the WOT & steering test in the middle of the scan, otherwise you have to jump in the truck quick. I don't have the cord, only because I haven't ordered one & my truck has been trouble free for the last couple years.
