Most likely it's the input shaft bearing IN the transmission. I assume you get the whine just sitting still with the transmission in neutral correct?

When the clutch pedal is pushed down the input shaft in the transmission stops. When the clutch pedal is pushed down the throwout bearing and the pilot bearing spin, so if it's quiet then those bearings are not causing the noise.

I hope this sheds a little light on your problem.

Well that makes sense... that's more info than I know already, I haven't gotten into how the transmission works exactly which may sound.. umm novice of me but it's true, haven't had to... I guess I'm headed for opening up the transmission and the replacing of maybe certain things but if I'm there might aswell rebuild it, maybe get a new slave, clutch, etc... while I'm in there

Sound info there, yep. Replace clutch, probably. Replace slave cylinder absolutely. I cheated out one a long time ago replacing the clutch but not the slave. You'd know a month later it started leaking and I had to go back in and replace it. Tough lesson!

Either way, it sounds like the tranny's coming out. Might be an idea to pick up a cheap used one and rebuild that at your leisure then do the swap. Way less downtime. I've found you can usually pick up a decent used one for $150, and if you're rebuilding anyway ...
Just a thought.

Yeah Chris that's not a bad idea because I need my truck, my wife is pregnant and about to pop any day and I won't leave her here without her car and with an inoperable truck... thanks dude

I assumed the trans is the m5r2 and we all know what assumptions do... but how do I tell exactly what trans it has? it says M inside the door and the truck is a 2wd.

ncranchero 03-14-2015 01:39 PM

There is a tag on the side of the trans. Get the number and look it up here.

Okay I looked it up and I do have the M5R2 but how do I tell how many teeth are on the 5th and Rev slider? is it 42 or 33? how the F do I distinguish which...? the tag says F2TA KA B44150...

Dude you are the bomb! But hold the phone.... I'm a dumb ass.... pause for effect on target... in all my wisdom... I had a leak not too long ago... coming from the top of the transmission.. so I pulled the top through the tunnel panel in the floor board and those infamous 3 plugs were blowing fluid... now being the not so brightest crayon in the box I just topped off the fluid.... well I just had a freaking epiphany and realized my transmission fluid hasn't been changed since I left GA, and drove to Missouri, and back to GA and then all the way here to Texas.... I changed it moments ago and it was brown... nasty and disgusting... now the whine is subsided and the shift are incredibly smoother... no ****...
