Default Transmission problem--maybe?

Experiencing a couple of issues with the truck and not sure they are related.
First, truck shakes violently when stepping hard on the gas on hills and it down shifts: the shaking is not as violent (but still noticeably present) when I turn off O/D. I have gone through all the adjustments, checks, etc called for in the Haynes manual, cleaned MAF, and I know the torque converter was replaced about a year ago (about 2k on the truck since replacement). I've also change trans filter and fluid. Reading though other threads there is mention that this problem may be the result of bad motor mounts but I'm not sure how to check those--visual inspection and they look fine. I've also checked the u-joints and they are tight but with the truck in neutral there is about 3/4 to an inch "slop" when turning the driveshaft, not sure if this is normal. Truck shifts well when gently accelerating, seems to shift hard when pressed. Also, there is a thunk when easing off the gas pedal while cruising.
Asking a method to check the motor mounts and is this "slop" in the driveshaft normal? Anything else I can check/test?

Second issue is I'm getting about 6 MPG mixed driving (60% at 55/60mph, 40% stop and go in town). Mention to see if there is a relation here. If not, I'll start another thread concerning the MPG.

There are no codes.

TIA

Have you checked the motor and transmission mounts?

I'll bet the two issues are related, dropping a cylinder or cylinders under load, pull the plugs, check cap and wires too....

Thanks for the replies.

Truck has new wires, plugs, cap, and rotor.
