Default Transmission Help

I have a 1989 f-150 and its got the V6. I want to get a V8 for my truck and send it away to get rebuilt. Someone is selling an 89 with the V8, but is a 4X4. I was wondering if i could switch out my transmission for the 4X4's? My truck is a 2-wheel drive(not sure if that matters?).

it would be much much easier to get a 2wd trans. the 4x4 trans has a different length output shaft. P.S., your truck absolutely does not have a v6

-6 or a v6? Just switch motors and leave the trans, a 4x4 trans will fit but you would have to leave the transfer case hooked up, 4x4 output shaft is shorter than a 4x2 trans.

There isn't much difference between a 4.9 I-6 and a 5.0 V8. Unless the V8 truck is a 5.8L (351) then Id just stick with what you have. You get 260 ft lb torque with the 4.9 and 270 with a 5.0. Not much difference at all. The 5.0 has about 35 more HP but the HP is not what matters, torque is what matters and the two engines are essentially the same torque wise. The I6 engine used in these trucks is a really big 6 cylinder. Only two cubic inches difference between the 6 cylinder and the most common V8 which is the 5.0.

Your transmission will not work in the other truck. (Not without alot of work changing the output shafts around. Itd be better to just get another transmission.... )
