no way its the transmission the diesels use. you should have a transmission code on your door jamb sticker.

Actually the diesels used the e4od transmission and so did the gas motors. Just different bell housings and of course torque converters.

So if you have the e4od then he was telling you the truth.

you can either check the door jamb sticker or check the pattern of the transmission pan underneath the tranny. Go to http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fd/full.aspx?Page=9
, should be page 9, and compare the pattern of your tranny pan with the ones listed on the right of the page, and thatll tell you

What are you talking about? Lol
Bad design?
Ford, dodge and chev have all used there heavy duty transmissions behind both there gas and diesel power plants.
And some still do!

I think he means that the E4OD seems a bit small to be be bolted up to a 7.3L

It does seem a bit small to me, unless maybe it was a reg cab 2wd, I would at least want a 4RW70

Lol if you think a 4r70w is a bigger/stronger trans then the e4od then you obviously never owned or serviced it.
The 4r70w has never been behind a diesel because it wouldn't last.
Ford used the e4od till 99 behind the diesel then they beefed it up and called it the 4r100. Then used that trans till 2003/2004 when they built the 5r110.
The e4od is a great trans and very strong stock if you keep it cool and service it. when upgraded can support over 1000 lbft of torque in diesel applications.

Also when servicing a e4od it holds almost 20 quarts of fluid! Lol I have a deep aluminum pan on one of mine and it holds over 20! Here's a pic

Well guess so, I thought it was the bigger one cause of the wider ratios.

Guess I was wrong

Just funny cause I've seen E4od's go bad in 2wd 300 and 4x4 351

But in all fairness I would actually want a 5spd.
