well gear oil is 85w so it could cause extra stress on the gears meaning extra wear now depends how long etc it also could cause extra heat in the case not good i had the oposit in my trans they put trany fluid when this trans needed gear some actualy do use trany in manuals so if in the manual it says trany fluid for your transfer then drain it and fill it with the right fluid then in a 1000 miles drain it again to get more of the gear oil out but there is nothing you can do now and it could also damege the seals depending if the seals are compatiable with gear oil there are many things that can go wrong but the bigest is increase in heat and slugish and it will cause extra wear

Walmarts "mercon" has gotten suprisingly very good ratings.
And its cheap.
Don't waste your money on "synthetic" atf imho
