tranny problem?
OK, here is what happened, 92 f 150 300 ci auto E4OD, I'm hauling an overloaded trailer up a ginormous hill, get to my house and the truck doesn't want to go anymore, as if the brakes are on. Wait about 5 min and it pulls ahead in drive. I let it cool about 5 hours, try to move it, NO REVERSE, NO NEUTRAL, only drive and with a drag. I mean won't move, tried to pull it and its as if it's still in park, engine rev's fine, will go into drive and move, yet again seems to be in park in both Reverse and Neutal. ANY IDEAS? I NEED HELP!
Was it doing anything funny while you were hauling? Is it leaking fluid anywhere? Could be a numberof things but my recommendation with the e4od is always to start with the electrical stuff first (mlps, tps, ecc) and find or eliminate the problem there, ruling out an actual mechanical faliure in the trans. Pull codes if you can to.
And good luck, those transmissions can be a major pain in the ***.

Tranny whined a bit when I cleared the hill but seemed to shift fine?

Do as another suggested, if can pull codes, do that first. Next thing I would do is what so many fail to do & that is drain the tranny fluid & drop the pan. inspect the filter & replace, regardless, install a new filter. Fluid & filter should be changed, yet we so often forget to do so.
Inspect the bottom of the pan & there should be a magnet in the pan to catch metal debris to try & prevent it from re-entering the tranny, see how much metal has collected on the magnet.
Not saying it will solve your problem, but I have bought a few trucks & cars where people believed they needed to sell due to tranny failure & just by fluid & filter change & had some good autos,
Depending on the situation, it can make the problem worst, if indeed you need a total tranny rebuild.
If you do have that thick, super fine metal dust on the pan magnet, that is typically Torque Converter debris. This fluid rarely if ever gets changed & holds about 2/3s of the tranny fluid.
Additionally, I do not recall if that particular has a modulater valve on the outside of the tranny housing, (should see a vacuum hose going to it), new they are about $15.
At the end of the day, ya just may find out you need to put the truck up on that trailor & find real horses to pull the trailor.. We all been there before, (that use trucks for work), sometimes we get thru the job ok, yet, there is that one time we do not & pay the hefty fee for chancing it..
Wish you the best
Having a pony do the work of a team of work horses will always create probls, but guessing you know that.. now, lol
