Default torque converter?

89 f 150 4.9L 6 died at the gas pump. Couldn't get it to turn over. Seemed like the battery was dead but bump started it and all was fine. Checked the volts from the battery running and off and both were normal. I got it to turn over the other day she was really working to kick over. When it started I had kind of a shot bearing sound. Checked the alternator etc. and all was fine. When I shut her down, I got a bunch of smoke rolling out of my bell housing. Needless to say I didn't pull any codes. I had a vibration at about 55 mph develop a while back. Is it thew torque converter, a bearing, a blown seal? I do have a bunch of oil soaked road dust on the underside of the truck. I was going to drop the trans but I don't really want to if I dont have to. Any advice? Thanks

sounds like the starter took a dump... pull the starter and have it tested... if it needs replaced replace the Solenoid as well...
