Timing please help
I let a friend convince me my timing was off and let him "adjust" it it's all messed up and I have no timing light. It's a 1994 f150 xlt 5.0 if there's any well detailed how to literature or videos i need a link please!!
Buy a timing light or borrow your friend's and hope your harmonic balancer has not slipped already to give an inaccurate indication. I cannot remember the last time I adjusted timing because it won't change unless something has failed or someone got bad advice and likely didn't pull off the plug from the spout connector..

It's been a while see if I can put it into words..............disconnect your coil wire & ground... ...so it won't start!!!
rotate your engine by hand......observe your timing marks on the dampner........when it comes up to your timing mark on timing case.....line it up with the pointer on timing cover.......try to be exact!!!
remove distributor cap & observe where the rotor is pointing..........also note where #1 is on the cap......now if it is close (or right on) pointing to where #1 position is (on the cap if it were on).....loosen the bolt that holds in the distributor & then rotate distributor to exactly where #1 is on the cap !!! Should be some what minor adjustment !!
If rotator is not pointing anywhere towards #1 ) & is about 180 degrees out...... it's not on the compression stroke!!! Manually keep rotating crankshaft another 180 degrees align the 2 marks again & now turn the distributor by hand till the rotor lines up with where # 1 would be on the cap....."again usually this adjustment is minor" ....
Snug the hold down bolt & try starting engine....it should run fine (but not perfect for driving).....As this is not perfect you should check with a timing light & then adjust to your desired setting!!!!
There is always a chance that the timing chain is stretched & has jumped a few teeth etc. so if you have a problem aligning (or it's way out) from that #1 is on the cap suspect that the chain has jumped !!....Do not crank the engine as it will keep jumping teeth & even start hitting the valves !!!!! It may have already!!!!

You can buy a special (cheapo) distributor wrench if you don't have anything else that will reach the clamp bolt.
With the engine idling, crawl under the front bumper & gently touch the harmonic balancer with a wire brush or piece of sandpaper. Then turn it off & bump the starter until the timing scale is at the bottom, so you can put a white mark at 10°BTDC (crayon, paint, whatever). Also try to clean the edge of the pointer & make it white:

If the engine is grimy, wait on all that until you've washed it a few times:

I actually tried one last ditch effort the other evening to get it by ear and actually succeeded with it. I still need to get a light and get it right but it's my understanding I have a pretty large window of error on this model due to the computer controls on everything
No, it's just as narrow a window as on any vehicle with a distributor; if not moreso. The computer relies on the distributor being timed right to do just about everything else. If it's not set to 10, everything will be off.
